Questions

Things that might be nice to know:
  • How much does the berm construction cost? Where does the money come from?
  • Neighbors have asked for engineering studies, environmental impact reports, and records of public input for months. If the County has been doing this construction for decades, why doesn't any documentation like this exist?
  • Money was recently spent to make the parking lots Americans With Disabilities Act compliant. Are the berms ADA compliant?
  • When the Coastal Commission issued a development permit, did they address public access?
  • When the Coastal Commission issued a development permit, was the community invited to provide input?
  • Does the City or County have a way to require that landlords and sellers disclosure to prospective renters and buyers that their views may be obstructed for several months per year?
  • How common are storms that cause damage to parking lots?
  • How much does it cost to repair a damaged lot? How much money is lost when the lot is closed?
  • Have engineering standards for parking lots improved over recent years?
  • Has there been any consideration given to building parking lots inland?
  • Has a coastal engineer ever done an analysis of wall heights and what combinations of tide, wave and wind conditions they protect against?
  • Could the wall increase wave height and could it have contributed to the damage to the pier in previous years? Has an expert in fluid mechanics ever explored this?
  • If a truly large wave (i.e., tsunami) hit, would the sand be more likely to get pushed into homes and cause damage to the surrounding area (a "shrapnel" effect)?
This is a "living" list. Questions will be added or removed as more information becomes available.
